Key Responsibilities

  1. Underwrite, negotiate and document multi-year, domestic and cross-border credit and political risk opportunities.
  2. Perform economic, market and country risk analyses.
  3. Develop and expand key broker and client relationships.
  4. Work within a team to ensure operating excellence through adherence to C&PR underwriting guidelines and Nationwide’s standards.

Professional Background

  1. At least 10 years of credit and political risk underwriting experience, gained at a top-tier bank, credit and political risk insurance carrier, or similar.
  2. Expertise in corporate, bank, and sovereign credit risk analysis. Formal credit training is a plus.
  3. Expertise in country risk analysis.
  4. Experience in negotiating bespoke nonpayment and PRI insurance wordings.
  5. A background in credit and political risk modeling is preferred.

Preferred work location is the New York metro area. Also open to candidates in Washington DC metro, Miami, and Chicago.

Job Description Summary

The primary role of this position is to lead an underwriting team including field underwriters responsible for sales and underwriting relationships for the Credit and Political Risk line of business. Establishes and maintains business relationships with agencies and/or brokers to drive sales growth and distribution expansion. The role focuses on underwriting, agency/customer relationship management, employee engagement, and expense management within a territory. Underwrites accounts independently based on authority level and underwriting appetite, analyzing obligor financials, credit ratings, management reputation, and business histories.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Analyze portfolio and individual account performance, developing actions to promote profitable growth, monitoring risk selection, renewal retention, and pricing decisions.
  2. Review and approve underwriting decisions of staff, ensuring compliance with legal, organizational, and strategic standards. Provide recommendations on underwriting strategies and opportunities. Manage underwriting quality and process efficiency. Participate in agency management and review complex or escalated cases.
  3. Set priorities and workflow standards for the department, monitor performance, and align organizational structure to achieve results.
  4. Develop and implement territory sales plans aligned with strategic business objectives, including financial and operational goals, budgets, and timelines. Manage team performance, including hiring, training, and performance reviews.
  5. Drive sales strategies to develop new business, improve retention, and ensure profitability. Engage with clients to strengthen relationships and address escalated issues.
  6. Consult with leaders, agents, brokers, and team members to provide expertise, educate, and identify opportunities. Collaborate with Home Office leaders on high-authority accounts.
  7. Communicate strategic and operational plans internally and externally. Promote awareness of corporate initiatives to maintain field effectiveness.
  8. Ensure operational excellence in policy issuance, coordination with back office, and data accuracy.
  9. Partner with leaders to train and develop staff, fostering a high level of competency and professionalism. Coach team members on pursuing credit and political risk opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or Master’s in finance, international affairs, or business administration is a plus.
  • 10+ years in trade credit underwriting.
  • Experience in developing rating and pricing models, delivering customer service solutions.
  • Skills include financial statement analysis, credit underwriting, country analysis, IT solutions, and model development.
  • Excellent relationships with broker and client communities, strong communication skills, and prior underwriting authority.
