Description:
Status: The Lead Produce Clerk is hired by and reports to the Produce Manager.
Purpose: To support an organized and smooth-running produce department and provide a variety of fresh produce items that appeal to an ever-expanding customer base. Support Produce Manager’s financial goals for the overall department in team meetings and by performing other tasks as assigned. All OH staff are responsible to provide welcoming, friendly, and helpful customer service to all shoppers and co-workers in accordance with our organizational goals and programs.

Responsibilities
SUPERVISION
- Ensure training of department staff on regular duties, safety, customer service, store policies, procedures, and ownership opportunities.
- Enforce and model customer service standards, operational procedures, store, and personnel policies.
MERCHANDISING & PURCHASING
- Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality and delivery. Assure compliance with all purchasing contracts and product guidelines.
- Maintain a product selection that reflects the shoppers needs, approve all new items, review and evaluate all products, and establish the selection for all produce and garden center departments.
- Work with local vendors and research new products that adhere to OH product merchandising policies. Keep department staff up-to-date on product changes.
- Follow established procedures and documentation for receiving, credits, and invoice coding.
- Participate in monthly Produce department inventory counts.
- Assist in the development and utilization of a promotions strategy.
- Perform periodic price and product selection comparisons.
- Set stocking priorities for department staff. Ensure shelves/coolers are fully stocked at all times and product is properly culled.
- Ensure accurate, up-to-date shelf tags, PLU’s or price labels, following OH sign and COOL labeling guidelines. Ensure accurate POS data.
- Coordinate and offer daily samples and coordinate the participation of local produce vendors in OH events and marketing.
- Ensure proper handling of perishable foods to ensure maximum product quality, flavor, freshness, and food safety. Train staff and ensure that all items are handled as specific to their need. Maintain proper refrigeration temperatures.
- Minimize and track department out-of-stocks and shrink. Develop and implement solutions to prevent recurring losses.
- Assist in preparation of cut produce program.
RECEIVING
- Adhere to posted delivery schedule within the established receiving hours of OH
- Foster vendor relationships that align with OH Ends.
- Maintain the receiving bay and department back stock areas to maximize product life and efficiencies in stocking.
- Code invoices, request credits, track shrink, and assist in timely paperwork submissions.
DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE
- Ensure that all department areas (aisles, shelves, bins, coolers, and storage areas) are kept in clean and orderly condition.
- Use equipment safely. Monitor cooler temperatures. Advise general manager of equipment problems.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Uphold and demonstrate our above & beyond customer service policy
- Interact with customers, in-person and on the phone, in a friendly, efficient manner
- Assist customers with special orders and respond to requests via OH communication systems. Delegate, research, and follow through as needed
- Maintain a clean, well-stocked, well-run departments that meet shopper’s needs.
FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE
- Support strategies to attain sales, margin, and labor goals for the department
- Review and understand departmental financial reports; support corrective action as needed.
- Have access to and know how to interpret necessary financial information about merchandise & labor costs, profit margins, shrink, sales data, and profit/loss reports.
OTHER DUTIES
- Provide department leadership in emergency/accident situations, following established store procedures.
- Adhere to security standards for vendors and receiving areas
- Ensure department equipment (including but not limited to: POS station, iPad, laptops, desk tops, U-boats, coolers, freezers, etc.) are kept in working order.
- Perform other tasks assigned by Produce Manager

- Develop knowledge about Co-ops and membership at OH.
- Maintain professional standards, i.e. punctuality, neatness, pleasant helpful manner.
- Maintain a flexible schedule and work as able to fulfill the needs of department (e.g. days, evenings and weekends).
Requirements:
Physical Job Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk for 8 hours/day, on average.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to use hands for keyboard, pulling and pushing standard office supplies and carts for hauling product.
- Ability to repeat motion with hands and arms for extended stretch of time.
- Ability to bend, squat, reach on an occasional basis.
- Willingness and ability to learn to meet the changing requirements of the job.
