Job Description

First Review of Applicants: 11/04/205 Resume and Cover Letter Required The New Hope "Legal and Community Advocate" will provide community based and legal advocacy services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their non‑offending family members. New Hope Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services provides comprehensive prevention, crisis intervention, general medical and legal advocacy, emergency shelter service, community education and information and support group services. New Hope serves all of Grant and Adam Counties. The position provides direct services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The position requires a unique understanding of national, state, and local issues to position the department to provide appropriate services to victims. This position will be required to work various hours/days of the week and is expected to work a minimum of 40 hours per week. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following examples of duties and accountabilities illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position. Employee must comply with all County and department policies, procedures, WAC’s, or other regulatory bodies. Assures 24-hour access to advocacy based counseling services, access to shelters, and provides 24-hour on-call duties. Secures shelter and safe home services for victims and family members. Facilitates the use of natural supports for victims and families. Provides crisis interventions, safety planning, legal and medical advocacy, information and referral to clients. Makes independent decisions while providing comprehensive case management services for clients. Provides support services for children of victims. Ensures that services to clients are compatible with the particular culture, and in the language of the specific ethnic minority being served. Builds informal networks and develops partnerships with law enforcement, housing resources, the medical community and other professionals. Prepares and provides community education and information within the scope of prevention guidelines. Document and maintain accurate client records. Participate in case staffing, trainings, and meetings as assigned. Actively participates in training and other meetings, whether in or out of office, as requested. Education, Experience, and Licensing To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Required High School Diploma or GED; Previous experience in domestic violence and sexual assault services; Meet all training and annual training requirements, including that outlined in WAC 388‑61A (5); Must complete initial training per WAC 248‑554‑020 (5), with 30 hours continued domestic violence education and 12 hours sexual abuse/assault education yearly, of which 15 hours must be in advocacy‑based training; Minimum of 4 hours of HIV/AIDS training; Valid Washington State Driver’s License: Must have a safe reliable vehicle with proof of automobile insurance; Background Check: Must have an acceptable background report at time of hire and every two years thereafter; and Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving report. Preferred Associates Degree Spanish Bilingual/Bicultural Leadership experience Knowledge of laws and regulations governing domestic violence and sexual assault services Be a survivor of domestic violence and/or sexual assault Knowledge of County and Agency policies and procedures Valid Washington State Driver's License: Must have a safe reliable vehicle with proof of automobile insurance Background Check: Must have an acceptable background report at time of hire and every two years afterward Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving report Physical Abilities and Working Conditions Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed indoors, but can be performed in varying temperatures. Work settings may include any of the New Hope offices, schools, jails, client’s homes, or community locations. Employee may be exposed to odors or vapors in the office or other work settings. Work may be performed in other environments where the employee may be exposed to sub‑sanitary environments, pets, and passive smoking. Daily exposure to potential verbal and physical aggression with risk of personal safety issues. Employee may be exposed to cleaning supply odors or vapors. Work duties may require the operation of vehicles, which involves risks associated with driving including road traffic conditions and inclement weather. Work duties may require employee to transport client in vehicles. Work includes cleaning and maintaining the shelter which is the living environment for some clients. Physical Requirements Physical abilities are primarily those required of an office or administrative position: the ability to walk, sit, write, hear, and speak; operation of office equipment, including, but not limited to phone, copy machine, fax machine, computer; typing on keyboard. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral, depth perception. Although not the primary focus of this position, the New Hope and Kids Hope facilities provide services where all positions may be exposed to potentially verbally and physically aggressive individuals and/or environments, as well as exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
